Like wine, the best green tea is the product of a specific year, and we have just received the first tea of 2008. The spring tea season, which brings the best quality teas, started in March this year - a little later than last year because of the unusually cold spring. We have secured a small allocation of some of the first teas of the season - the 'first flush', or first pickings from the tea bushes.

Xu Fu Long Ya : 2008 harvest, 'first flush' - just arrived

Xu Fu Long Ya uses leaves picked from the Long Ya Zao tea plant, a variety known for its early harvest. To look at, the processed shoots are like tiny green pine needles, with a wonderfully vibrant green colour, a product of the high altitude of the tea gardens where they are harvested (between 1200 and 1350 metres). The aroma and taste are extremely fresh, with sweet hints of freshly mown grass and lots of complexity. If you tried this last year, it's even better this time round! You really feel the freshness of the leaf – no surprise really, as this ‘first flush’ tea was only picked a few short weeks ago. [arrived in UK, April 10th]

£7.50 for 25g.

Meng Ding Gan Lu: 2008 harvest, 'first flush' - just arrived

The leaves of this are harvested from the high peaks of Mount Meng, in Sichuan Province, and we have secured a small allocation of this limited supply tea. Tiny shoots picked at their freshest give this ‘first flush’ tea a bright, springtime flavour. Soft, downy little leaves when dry, they open out into vivid green shoots made up of the tiniest leaves. A hint of sweetness is present in the aroma with touches of citrus and green olive flavour. This is a delicate tea that shows off the best of what first flush, new season tea can deliver. Great value. [arrived in UK, April 10th]

£6.50 for 50g.
